Naum of Ohrid

Naum of Ohrid
Missionary to the Slavs, Bulgarian priest, translator, saint. He accompanied Cyril and Methodios to Moravia (qq.v.) in 863, as did Kliment of Ohrid (q.v.). After Methodios's death in 885, he went with Kliment to Bulgaria (q.v.) where he created centers at Preslav and Pliska (qq.v.) for the translation of holy texts into Church Slavonic (q.v.). In 893 he took up the work that Kliment had begun in Macedonia (q.v.). He died in 910 at Sveti Naum, the monastery he founded on the shore of Lake Ohrid.
